North of the Algarve, the Alentejo unfolds in rolling plains of wheat and cork oak, dotted with whitewashed hilltop villages. Évora, UNESCO-listed, crowns it with a Roman temple, a bone chapel and golden squares. This is wine country and slow-food country, where lunch lasts and time stretches. The wild Alentejo coast, Comporta, Vila Nova de Milfontes, adds long, uncrowded beaches.
When to go
The Algarve shines from May to September, with the best balance of warm sea and manageable crowds in May-June and September. July-August are hot and busy on the coast. The Alentejo is lovely in spring (green and flowering) and autumn; midsummer inland can be very hot.
How to combine the south
From Lisbon, the classic route runs south through the Alentejo, a night or two around Évora or the coast, before finishing on the Algarve’s beaches.
