Voyage sur-mesure en Algarve

Tailor-Made Trip to the Algarve

This destination is part of our Tailor-Made Trip to Portugal pillar page. We shape each itinerary around your profile: couples, families, groups of friends, works councils or corporate retreats. For budget planning, see our 2026 budget guide.

The Algarve is Portugal’s best-known region — and the easiest place to fall into the tourist trap. Our role as a local agency is to take you far from the concrete resorts, towards the still-confidential coves, the whitewashed villages of the hinterland, and the best seafood restaurants on the coast.

Why visit the Algarve

The Algarve is 200 km of Atlantic coastline with 300 days of sunshine a year, ochre cliffs, spectacular sea caves (Benagil), preserved fishing villages (Salema, Cacela Velha) and a sea-driven gastronomy. It is also a mountainous hinterland (Serra de Monchique) often forgotten by guidebooks.

Areas and villages to explore

Lagos and the Costa Vicentina: the wilder west coast, with Praia do Camilo, Praia da Marinha (voted best beach in Europe) and the Sagres promontory. Ideal for hikers and surfers.

Tavira and the eastern Algarve: the least visited part, with its barrier islands (Ilha de Tavira, Ilha Deserta), salt flats and Moorish architecture. Our top pick for travellers wanting to escape the crowds.

Faro and the Ria Formosa: the regional capital, its little-known historic centre and protected lagoon to explore by kayak or private boat.

Monchique and the Serra: the mountainous hinterland 30 minutes from the coast, with thermal baths, hiking trails and 360° viewpoints.

Experiences we recommend

  • Private boat trip to the Benagil sea caves at sunrise (before the mass tours arrive).
  • Surf lesson in Sagres with a local instructor.
  • Seafood feast in a fishermen’s marisqueira in Olhão.
  • Hiking the Rota Vicentina between Aljezur and Odeceixe.
  • Visit to the Castro Marim salt flats and fleur de sel tasting.

When is the best time to visit the Algarve?

May-June and September-October are ideal: 22 to 28 °C, sea at 19-22 °C, beaches still quiet. July-August is saturated and scorching. Winter stays mild (15-18 °C in the day) and is great for hiking trails and quiet villages.

Algarve FAQ

Should I rent a car in the Algarve? Yes, it is the only way to reach the hidden coves and inland villages. We also organise private day drivers for travellers who would rather not drive. Is the Algarve family-friendly? Very much so, especially the central coast (Albufeira to Lagos) and the eastern Algarve (Tavira). Beaches are safe, shallow, and providers are used to children. How many days to plan? 4 to 6 days to properly cover one section of the coast. 7 to 10 days to combine Algarve and Alentejo.

The Algarve in brief — two regions, two moods

The Algarve splits in two: the west (Sagres, Lagos, Carvoeiro) with its ochre cliffs, dramatic beaches and surf vibe, and the east (Tavira, Olhão, Cacela Velha), quieter, more authentic, with the Ria Formosa and its barrier islands. We almost always recommend the east for a discovery trip, and the west for family stays or active holidays.

Beaches and experiences not to miss

Praia da Marinha, Praia do Camilo, Benagil cave, Ponta da Piedade cliffs, Tavira island, Ria Formosa by catamaran: the Algarve is packed with iconic sites. We organise exclusive off-season and off-hour outings to avoid crowds — 7 am kayak into Benagil, ultralight flight over the cliffs, oyster tasting straight on the Ria Formosa oyster beds.

Algarve food — fish, cataplana and almond sweets

Cataplana (fish and seafood stew cooked in a copper vessel), grilled sardines, percebes (goose barnacles) from the west coast and Arab-inspired almond sweets are the region’s culinary emblems. Our picks: Ocean (2 Michelin stars, Porches), Vila Joya (2 stars, Albufeira), O Barradas (family-run, Silves).
