  • Budget: Porto is 15-20% cheaper than Lisbon.
  • Length: Lisbon 3-4 days, Porto 2-3 days.
  • Our take: both if you have 7 days, Lisbon first for a first-time visitor.

Porto or Lisbon: which one to choose?

This is the most frequent question we get. As a local agency based in Lisbon since 2013 but organising trips in both cities, we have no bias: both deserve your visit, but they don’t share the same personality at all.

Lisbon: the city of seven hills

550,000 inhabitants, national capital, Atlantic-facing on the Tagus. Strengths: a top European food scene, unique neighbourhood diversity (Alfama, Chiado, Príncipe Real, Belém), Sintra 40 min away, Cascais 30 min, milder winters. Weaknesses: pricier, busier, more spread out.

Porto: birthplace of Portugal and of Port wine

235,000 inhabitants, on the Douro, UNESCO-listed. Strengths: more authentic, more walkable, Douro Valley 1 h away, young creative vibe, 15-20% cheaper. Weaknesses: rainier climate, fewer museums, quieter nightlife.

Which one based on your profile?

First Portugal trip: Lisbon first. Wine tourism: Porto + Douro. Romantic getaway: Porto. Foodie trip: Lisbon. Family trip: Lisbon with Sintra/Cascais day trips. 7 days or more: both cities by train or short flight.
