Family trip to Portugal, Algarve with kids, Lisbon with a baby, family-friendly transport and hotels: 10 practical tips tested by our local English-speaking agency in Lisbon.
Portugal is one of the most welcoming destinations in Europe for families: safe, mild climate, short distances, reasonable prices, kid-friendly food. But a few precautions turn a good trip into a great memory. Here are our 10 tips.
1. Pick the right season
May-June and September are perfect with kids: mild temperatures, short queues, beaches still quiet. Avoid July-August unless you stay near the coast.
2. Adapt the pace
No more than 2 “cultural” visits per day with kids under 12. Always alternate with playful activities: beach, park, market, workshop.
3. Skip the car in cities
Lisbon and Porto are tough with a stroller: cobbled streets, hills, difficult parking. Use trams, metro and taxis (Uber/Bolt are safe and affordable).
4. Book major sites in advance
Sintra (Pena), Lisbon Oceanário, Livraria Lello in Porto: huge queues in high season. Book online ahead or via your agency.
5. Prioritise hands-on experiences
Pastel de nata workshop, surf lesson in Cascais or Ericeira, Tagus boat trip, educational farm visits in the Alentejo: kids will always remember what they did more than what they saw.
6. Eat local — and early
The Portuguese eat dinner late (9 pm), but restaurants open from 7 pm to welcome families. Simple, fresh food, almost always kid-friendly: grilled meats, rice, fish, fruit.
7. Pack sunscreen — year round
The Portuguese sun is strong even in winter. Sunglasses, hats, SPF 50 cream are essential for kids.
8. Choose your coast carefully
The Atlantic Ocean can be cold (16-19 °C) and have currents. For family swims, prefer sheltered beaches: Cascais, central Algarve, eastern Algarve (Tavira).
9. Hire an English-speaking guide for major visits
A great guide makes even kids curious: the English-speaking guides we recommend know how to adapt their delivery to children, with anecdotes, games and riddles.
10. Leave room for the unexpected
A beach day that runs late, an unscheduled nap, an extra ice cream: never plan a day at 100% capacity. The best memories often come from unplanned moments.
