Tailor-Made Trip to Madeira

This destination is part of our Tailor-Made Trip to Portugal pillar page. We shape each itinerary around your profile: couples, families, groups of friends, works councils or corporate retreats. For budget planning, see our 2026 budget guide.

Madeira is a volcanic island sitting 1,000 km off mainland Portugal, in the middle of the Atlantic. Nicknamed “the island of flowers” and “the floating garden”, it offers a unique playground: vertiginous levada trails, cliffs plunging into the ocean, UNESCO-listed laurel forests and a year-round spring microclimate. Our role is to keep you off the tour-bus circuits and immersed in the real Madeira.

Why visit Madeira

Madeira’s charm is its diversity: in four days you can hike at 1,800 m altitude, swim in lava-formed natural pools, walk through a thousand-year-old forest and sip a poncha by the sea — all on a 60 km long island. It is also one of Europe’s safest destinations for solo travellers and families.

Must-see sites

Funchal, the capital, has a vibrant historic centre, an exotic fruit market (Mercado dos Lavradores), botanical gardens and the cable car up to Monte. Don’t miss the descent in carros de cesto, the wicker toboggans driven by men in white.

Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo: the island’s two highest peaks, linked by one of Europe’s most beautiful hikes (8 km, 3-4h).

Levadas: these century-old irrigation channels, lined by walking paths, offer over 2,000 km of trails ranging from easy to demanding (Levada do Caldeirão Verde, Levada das 25 Fontes).

Porto Moniz and its volcanic natural pools, on the north coast.

Câmara de Lobos, the old fishing village where Winston Churchill came to paint, perfect for tasting the original poncha.

Experiences we recommend

  • Private Pico do Arieiro – Pico Ruivo hike with English-speaking guide and arranged transfers.
  • Boat trip to spot dolphins and whales (year-round residents).
  • Madeira wine tasting in a century-old Funchal cellar.
  • 4×4 day on the forgotten roads of the wild west.
  • Madeiran cooking class (espetada, bolo do caco, lapas).

When is the best time to visit Madeira?

Madeira can be visited year-round thanks to its subtropical climate (18 to 25 °C average). April-May and September-October offer the best balance between temperature, fewer crowds and fully open trails. The famous Flower Festival takes place in late April or early May. Winter stays very mild and is ideal to escape European cold.

Madeira in brief — the island of eternal spring

Discovered by navigator João Gonçalves Zarco in 1419, Madeira is a volcanic island 1,000 km south-west of Lisbon. Its steep terrain, subtropical climate and 2,500 km network of levadas (historic irrigation channels turned walking paths) make it a one-of-a-kind destination in Europe. Cristiano Ronaldo was born here. Madeira wine and poncha (local rum) are the island’s signature drinks.

Must-do levada walks and hikes

Levada do Caldeirão Verde, Levada das 25 Fontes, the Pico do Arieiro-Pico Ruivo traverse (the three highest peaks on the island) and the Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço to the east are Madeira’s legendary walks. We arrange all of them with certified English-speaking guides and round-trip transfers from your hotel.

Funchal and Madeiran cuisine

Funchal, the capital, hosts the Mercado dos Lavradores, the Monte tropical gardens (with the famous wicker toboggan ride down), the Madeira wine cellars (Blandy’s, Barbeito) and a surprisingly strong food scene. Must-try: espetada (beef skewer on a bay-leaf stick), bolo do caco (garlic bread), scabbard fish with banana, traditional poncha. Our picks: Il Gallo d’Oro (2 stars), William (1 star), Akua.
