Voyage sur-mesure dans l'Alentejo

Tailor-Made Trip to the Alentejo

This destination is part of our Tailor-Made Trip to Portugal pillar page. We shape each itinerary around your profile: couples, families, groups of friends, works councils or corporate retreats. For budget planning, see our 2026 budget guide.

The Alentejo is our secret favourite in Portugal: a vast, sparsely populated region (a third of the country) where time seems to stand still. Endless plains, century-old olive trees, award-winning vineyards, whitewashed villages with flower-lined alleys, medieval castles and a wild Atlantic coastline. The ideal destination to slow down.

Why visit the Alentejo

If you are looking for the opposite of Algarve resorts and Lisbon buzz, the Alentejo is your answer. Organic vineyards, boutique hotels in former monasteries, terroir gastronomy (black pork, Serpa cheese, regional wines), preserved villages (Monsaraz, Marvão, Évora) and deserted beaches on the Vicentine coast.

Must-see sites

Évora: the regional capital, UNESCO-listed, with its Roman Temple of Diana, Gothic cathedral and Chapel of Bones.

Monsaraz: a fortified village perched above Lake Alqueva, the largest artificial lake in Europe — a stargazer’s paradise.

Marvão and Castelo de Vide: the northern hilltop white villages on the Spanish border.

Comporta: the chic and discreet coastline, beloved by Lisbon locals for its empty beaches and fresh oysters.

Experiences we recommend

  • Private tasting at a herdade (wine estate) with lunch under the olive trees.
  • Stargazing in Monsaraz (a certified Dark Sky reserve).
  • Lusitano horse riding, the iconic regional breed.
  • Alentejan cooking class (açorda, migas, sericaia).
  • Visit to a cork workshop (the region’s exclusive industry).

Authentic Alentejo: why this region remains a secret

Just 1h30 from Lisbon, the Alentejo covers a third of Portugal’s territory and is home to only 5% of its population. This is where you’ll find some of Portugal’s most beautiful white villages — hilltop Monsaraz, eagle’s nest Marvão, UNESCO-listed Évora — set against endless olive groves, cork oaks and vineyards.

The experiences we craft in the Alentejo

  • Tastings at the producers: the vineyards of Reguengos, Vidigueira and Borba produce some of Portugal’s finest bold reds. We arrange private visits with the winemakers themselves.
  • Stay in a monte alentejano: these former fortified farms are now characterful guesthouses with infinity pools and host tables.
  • UNESCO Évora: private visit of the Temple of Diana, the Chapel of Bones and the cathedral, followed by a traditional lunch in a tasquinha.
  • Wild beaches of the Vicentine coast: the Alentejo boasts one of Europe’s most pristine coastlines, from Porto Covo to Zambujeira do Mar.
  • Stargazing at Alqueva: the world’s first Starlight Tourism Destination, perfect for an unforgettable astronomy evening.

How many days to spend in the Alentejo?

We recommend 3 to 4 days for a first visit, starting from Lisbon. This allows you to combine Évora, Monsaraz, a wine estate, a night in a monte and an afternoon by the coast. Wine lovers or hikers can easily justify 5 to 6 days.

The best time to visit

April-June and September-October offer ideal conditions: mild temperatures (22-28°C), blossoms or harvest, golden evening light that’s perfect for photography. Avoid July-August: temperatures regularly exceed 40°C inland.
